<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (3)

Patricia (Pat, Patty, Auntie Patty) Ann Swanson passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Edina, Minnesota on July 8, 2024. She was born December 28, 1949 in Red Wing, Minnesota to parents Henry and Mildred Swanson. She graduated from Red Wing High School and St. Olaf College. She worked for many years for The Hartford and while she was fine with the work, it was the people that she enjoyed the most.Pat had a twinkle in her eyes that was a good indicator of the sass, confidence, and the distinct possibility for conspiratorial fun. Pat loved purple, her dogs and also all other dogs, a good laugh, and talking politics especially with fellow liberals. She loved peace signs (and the actual peace they signify), and she loved her friends and her family. She was always up for a good time, and was never fearful to turn down an offer for something that promised not to be a particularly good time. As such, she taught many the phrase, "it just won't work for me." Pat was a fiercely independent woman who did not suffer fools, so you knew when she showed up to an event that she wanted to be there, and when she did arrive, she invariably had a DIet co*ke or Diet Dr. Pepper in hand. She had a delightful habit of dropping off little thoughtful gifts to her local friends when no one was expecting them, and was always willing to go on the hunt for some strange item that someone might need-she was really good at thrifting finds. She didn't love baking, but happily made peanut butter kisses and crinkle cookies every holiday season (and she was a pro at sharing a secret stash of them to ensure leftovers). Pat was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Mildred Swanson, ex-husband Mark Paulson, and her dogs, many that she adopted as seniors and gave the best life to for their remaining days. She is survived by her beloved sister Sue Midness, brother-in-law and constant foil Robert "Boo" Midness, nephews Sjur and Haakon and their respective wives Briar and Paige, grand-nieces Annika, Grete, Nora, Maeve, and Liv, and her sweet senior puppies Baxter and Gordy, who are extremely saddened.A Memorial Service will be held on August 26th, 2024 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church (5025 Knox Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55419). Visitation will begin at 1pm CST, the Memorial Service will start at 2pm, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Pat's name to Mount Olivet Lutheran Church (www.mtolivet.org) or the Animal Humane Society (animalhumanesociety.org).

<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (4)

Bukstein, Marlene Rae (nee Goldstein) age 75, of New Hope, passed away from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm on August 5, 2024. While exercising with her longtime coach, Brian, it suddenly leaked and struck her down. Marlene met her future husband, Jim, in 3rd grade at Willard Elementary and graduated from Minneapolis North High School. Much later in life, while raising a family of four children, she earned her degree in Information Management by attending night school at St. Catherine College. While her children were going through nursery school, she worked there to be with them. Similarly, with her children going to Herzl Camp for years, she spent many summers working there to be with her kids. She was a tireless volunteer for many organizations. "If you need something done, call Marlene", was frequently heard in the community. She was especially happy being a greeter at Beth El Synagogue every week. For decades, she welcomed and personally greeted everyone arriving. She never was discouraged despite repeated severe medical problems and many surgeries. Because of disease and neuropathy, her damaged feet made walking difficult, but that never slowed her down. If someone told her, "You can't do that", she delighted in proving them wrong, including winning a "Dancing with the Stars" contest with her husband. A strong woman of action, her mottoes were "just do it" and "go for it", and this is how she lived her life. She had a zeal for life and lived it with gusto. She loved to travel, especially enjoying long car trips and cruises, and she delighted in going on adventures with her grandkids, either in town or across the country. She would never turn down an opportunity for new, exciting challenges. Being an expert at sewing, she delighted in making beautiful personalized embroidered shirts for each grandchild's birthday featuring their age, favorite color, and characters. She made amazing activity books for them using special creativity. Her greatest love was doting on her seven beloved grandchildren. Marlene is gone way too soon - she really enjoyed life, especially her kids and grandkids, and is greatly missed. Survived by husband of 53 years, Jim; brother, Howard Goldstein; sister, Rose (Daniel) Sloven; children, Andy Bukstein, Amy (Ben) Rajkowski, Ben (Jennifer) Bukstein, and Cari (Travis) Rohe; grandchildren, Reuben Bukstein, Delilah, Ilsa, Sylvia and Solomon Rajkowski, and Logan and Charlotte Rohe. Preceded in death by parents, Morey J. and Nellie Harriette Goldstein; granddaughter, Ava Scarlet Rohe; and brother, Stephen Wayne Goldstein. Donations in her memory can be made to your favorite organization. She was active in Hadassah, Beth El Synagogue, and Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School. Special thanks go to her Endocrinologist, Dr. Sidney Jones, who was her virtual life saver for decades. Thank you also to everyone at North Memorial Neuro ICU for their loving care. Marlene would like everyone to know: "I was a good sport". Services were held on August 7th at Beth El Synagogue. Shiva 7:00 pm Thursday and Sunday at Beth El Synagogue. Dr. J. Paul Carlson died at home in the company of his family on August 3, 2024, now free from Parkinson's and lung cancer. J. Paul was born to medical missionaries in Chongqing, China on July 10, 1944. He grew up in Newman Grove, NE and graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of MN Medical School. He practiced oncology and hematology at Park Nicollet Clinic and served as Medical Director of Methodist Hospice. He was active at Augustana Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. J. Paul's 56-year marriage to his wife Anne is a model of mutual sacrifice and caring devotion. He was an extraordinary dad and grandpa, and a compassionate, patient-centered physician. He cultivated an authentic faith and moored his life in simplicity, generosity and love for all people. "Babbo", as his family knew him, could build just about anything with wood. He often arrived places by bicycle, with his pant leg tucked into his sock to keep it out of the chain. He cherished trips to Lanesboro and Grand Marais with family. He loved doing high dives into the lake, making big pots of stew, walking in the woods and singing with the Apollo Male Chorus. On long bike rides he would take his hands off the handlebars and stretch out his arms, singing Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." The world is more wonderful for having had J. Paul in it. Preceded in death by parents Emery and Elvera Carlson, sister Erleen, mother and father-in-law, Marta and Bill Berg, and sister-in-law Marcia Conrad. <![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (29)

Berg, Norbert Raymond James age 92, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor was born in Edgar, Wisconsin on January 18, 1932. In his own words, Norb was the "champion of lost causes, dumb animals and females in distress." He was larger than life, having touched thousands with his generosity, compassion, support, and of course, humor. Norb died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on July 26 at his home in St. Paul, Minnesota. Norb was first and foremost a family man. He was deeply devoted to his wife of 61 years, Marilyn, his four sons, and his entire extended family. Throughout his life, he loved singing, hunting, fishing, golfing, farming, playing poker, performing elaborate card tricks, and a good story. His jokes could be as indecent as those of a salty sailor or as innocent as words from a cloistered nun. Norb graduated as valedictorian from St. John's Preparatory School (Collegeville, Minnesota) in 1949. His college studies were interrupted when he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was commissioned to serve in Korea as a lieutenant during the Korean War. He remained a true patriot all of his days. In 1955, he completed his undergraduate degree from St. John's University. He went on to become one of the first people to earn a master's degree in Industrial Relations from the University of Minnesota. While attending graduate school Norb met the love of his life, Marilyn. They were married in 1957 and went on to have four sons. In 1959, Norb began a distinguished career with what was then a small computer company, Control Data Corporation (CDC). In both his career and life, Norb was a fearless pioneer. During his executive tenure at CDC, Norb left a legacy of innovation in human resources practices unmatched in corporate America. He pioneered revolutionary programs like Flex Time and Employee Assistance decades before work-life balance was regularly discussed. Norb was also a trailblazer in Corporate Social Responsibility and prioritized equal opportunity standards, bringing jobs, educational opportunities, and healthcare into marginalized communities. Even in his retirement to Cumberland, WI, Norb continued to innovate, establishing Boyer Creek Ranch, at the time the largest red deer farm in North America. Norb's signature compassion and creativity kept him involved in a broad range of activities aimed at fixing societal problems and aiding the less fortunate. Among other groundbreaking initiatives, he started the 12 Baskets Food Rescue Program, which later became Second Harvest Heartland. He also developed the first of its kind Employee Advisory Resource program which became the template for thousands of similar employee assistance programs within corporations and organizations worldwide. His many accolades include the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, The Caring Award from the Caring Institute in Washington, D.C., and the Minnesota Corrections Association Corrections Man of the Year. Norb is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; parents, Oscar and Edna Berg; brothers and sisters, the Reverend Donald Berg, Dorothy Kelm, Elaine Winkler and Tom Berg. He is survived by siblings Sylvia Fergot, Marvin Berg and David (Darlene) Berg; children Kevin (Jennifer), Mitch, Tony, and Paul (Jennifer); nine grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Monday, August 5 at O'Halloran and Murphy in St. Paul. Mass of Christian burial 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 6 at Lumen Christi Catholic Church, 2055 Bohland Avenue, St. Paul, with visitation one hour prior to Mass. Interment with his wife at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at a later date. We wish to give our most heartfelt thanks to the staff at Carondelet Village for the professionalism, care and love they gave to both Marilyn and Norb throughout their residency. Memorials preferred to Sisters Rising Worldwide. O'Halloran & Murphy 651-698-0796 www.ohalloranmurphy.com

<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (33)

Joan Challeen, aged 87, of Inver Grove Heights, passed away surrounded by family on July 20th, following a long health decline.Joan Zaharopoulos was born in 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, to Anthony and Mary, immigrants from Greece. After her high school graduation, she began working in a downtown office building where she met her future spouse, Gordon Challeen, while riding in an elevator. Lovely sparks flew and they were married within a year. The early death of both her parents, as well as her new married life led her to Gordon's home state, Minnesota, which was very different from Chicago. Joan said the transition was not easy and involved adjusting to small town Mankato, while Gordon finished college at Gustavus Adolphus College. They eventually moved to the "big city" of St. Paul where Gordon was employed at 3M for his entire career.Joan's greatest joy came from family. She and Gordon raised three children, Michael (Kate), Kathryn (Joe), and Linda (Denny), and Joan adored each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include Nicole (Eric), Michael (Tiffanie), Raina (Bobby), Claire, Tony, Morgan and Alex. Great-grandchildren include Lila, Logan, Mae, Selma, Mora, Gwenyth, and James. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Challeen, and her parents, Mary and Anton Zaharopoulos. She is survived by her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.In addition to ninja-level home-making (a cleaner home would be hard to find), and outstanding food labeling skills (keeping 3M post-it notes in business), Joan enjoyed crafting, passing along many heirlooms to family members over the years. She also was an excellent baker, which made her house a big draw for the kids in the neighborhood. Her wonderful baklava recipe, as well as the special way she prepped lamb chops for grilling, will remind us of her every time we gather as a family over a meal that includes one of those delicious items. No services will be held at this time, with a private interment to be scheduled. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to DeathWithDignity.org or one of your own meaningful charities.

<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (34)

Maya Gregoret was born in 1930 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, the only child of Olga and Paul Petrenko. She had an eventful early life: her father, Paul, was arrested and imprisoned five years during Stalin's purges of the 1930s. Shortly after Paul's sentence ended, World War II broke out and Germany invaded Ukraine. The family was conscripted by the Germans as laborers and brought first to Poland and then to Berlin (again experiencing bombing, this time by the Allies). After Germany's defeat, Maya and her parents found themselves as stateless refugees, unwilling and afraid to return to the USSR. They were assigned to a Displaced Persons camp in Hannover, Germany. Maya graduated from the Ukrainian high school established at the camp, and then from a German interpreters school where she majored in German and English. The Petrenkos arrived in the USA in 1950, and thanks to a local sponsor, settled in St. Paul, MN. Maya's knowledge of English gave her a head start in finding skilled work. Although she hoped to study medicine, she also wanted to support her parents, who were highly educated but still English language learners then. Maya worked at the Wood Conversion Company (Conwed) as a secretary where she enjoyed both her job and the camaraderie of her coworkers. Maya met her husband, Oleh Gregoret, also a Ukrainian immigrant, soon after arriving in the US, but marriage had to wait until Oleh finished serving in Korea and then graduated from college. They married in 1961. In the early years of their marriage, Maya and Oleh enjoyed exploring America by car, working together on their home, and spending time with their friends and family. Maya loved being a mother and always seemed to have many neighborhood children in her midst. The Gregorets took up sailing on the St. Croix and on Lake Pepin. Maya was a capable first mate and was even hoisted to the top of the mast on occasion for repairs. She returned to the workforce when her children were teens, spending 14 years at Minnesota Mutual (Securian). In retirement, Maya took on the editorship of The St. Katherine Ukrainian Orthodox Church's bimonthly magazine. For more than a decade, she applied her formidable formatting and translation skills, and Oleh's photographs, to produce a bilingual publication eagerly anticipated by parishioners. She also led tours of the church for seminary students and others. Maya delighted in being with her grandchildren who adored her. Maya is survived by her son Alexander, daughter Lydia, son-in-law Chuck, and grandchildren Colin (McKenzie) and Jem. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Oleh. FUNERAL SERVICE: Saturday, August 10 at 10 am at St. Katherine Ukrainian Orthodox Church,1600 West Highway 96, Arden Hills, MN 55112, interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, with lunch to follow at a location to be specified. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Maya's memory to St Katherine church or to the Protez Foundation.

<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (46)

John Bradford Lilja, Jr, known to childhood friends as "Brad" and to General Tommy Franks as "Stretch", age 54, passed peacefully at home on July 31, 2024 after an 8-month battle with small-cell carcinoma. He was surrounded by family, and knew that he was loved.John was born August 13, 1969 to John Sr. & Dorothy (Dot) Lilja in Minneapolis. He & his sister Emily grew up in the East Isles area of Uptown. John graduated from the Summatech program at Minneapolis North High School in 1987 and went on to earn a degree (and a half) in Architecture from the University of Minnesota.John joined the Navy in 1989 and spent 4 years in active duty. He met his wife Dolly Ragudo in 1991 while stationed in Yokohama, Japan. Dolly moved to Minnesota and they were married on May 7, 1994. Despite his cancer progressing, they celebrated their 30th anniversary with about 50 friends & family this past May.John remained in the Navy Reserves, retiring in 2018 as a Lieutenant Senior Chief. He was "called up" twice to go to war as a reservist: once to Bahrain for the ramp-up to the Iraq War in 2002, and once to Afghanistan in 2011-12. It is likely his time in Afghanistan that led to the "war cancer" that killed him.Though John lived most of his life in Minneapolis, he was adventurous, and traveled all over the world. His time in the Navy took him from Australia to Afghanistan to Abu Dhabi. He also traveled a lot with his family, from Costa Rica to the Philippines to the Boundary Waters. His most recent trip was 2 weeks in Japan with his family just weeks before he passed.John worked in home remodeling and home inspections for most of his career, most recently leading the Healthy Homes federal lead abatement program for the City of Minneapolis.John's greatest love was spending time with his family. His sons David (28) and James (18) have many great memories of spending time with their dad, watching the Vikings, grilling on the deck, and of course traveling. His nieces also remember lots of good times with him at the cabin and many family birthday parties.John is survived by his beloved wife Dolly Ragudo Lilja, sons David Lilja and James Lilja, mother Dorothy Lilja, sister Emily Lilja Palmer (Larry Birch), nieces Sahro Vedder and Siobhan Palmer, great-niece Zora Rhyns, and many beloved relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by father John Bradford Lilja in 1992.A memorial celebration will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 10th at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis. A lunch reception will follow the service. John will be buried at Fort Snelling in a private ceremony. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Charitable Service Trust.John's family is deeply grateful to the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital staff for caring for John so well through his cancer journey; to his Navy family for the incredible support, and to everyone who has tried to make the heartbreak of his illness and passing just a little easier.
