Anyone! The more people in the CoCoRaHS network the better! We are looking for accurate and consistent observations, however. Summertime rain showers and thunderstorms produce highly variable precipitation amounts and forecasters, emergency management officials, water resource planners, and many others use your CoCoRaHS data on a daily basis. Even if you received no precipitation, we want to know. Sometimes reports of zero precipitation are as important as when precipitation occurs. How do I join?To become an observer, click on "Join CoCoRaHS" and complete the on-line application form or contact your regional coordinator. You will receive an e-mail with your CoCoRaHS ID and instructions. As soon as you have a username, password and a rain gauge, you many enter observations immediately!What will I need?You will need to purchase a standard 4-inch rain gauge to measure your precipitation. For the quality of the data to be consistent everyone must have the same rain gauge.

Having recently received the bi-monthly newsletter for CoCoRaHS observers, “The Catch,” it seemed like a good opportunity to share some highlights of the 2014 year. CoCoRaHS, www.cocorahs.org, originated in 1998 with the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University. A flood in the Fort Collins area a year earlier showed the need for localized precipitation information, which prompted the system. Much of the eastern contiguous U.S. (CONUS), south of the Great Lakes, received little to no rainfall, and this is on top of several weeks of below normal rainfall leading up to last week. In addition, temperatures have remained hot for many locations. This combination of antecedent dryness, much below normal rainfall, and hot temperatures has resulted in rapidly deteriorating conditions, particularly across the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast, with large increases in abnormally dry (D0) and moderate drought (D1) conditions. Conversely, southern Texas, the Four Corners region, and the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains experienced several rounds of heavy rainfall. Some locations across southern Texas (associated with Tropical Storm Alberto) and the north-central CONUS received well in excess of 5 inches of rainfall that led to flash and river flooding, as well as improvements to drought conditions. Some localized flooding also occurred in portions of the Four Corners region, associated with a surge of tropical moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto that came ashore in northern Mexico late last week. Across much of the western CONUS, conditions are starting to dry out a bit, particularly in the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies. In Alaska, moderate drought was introduced in the eastern interior Mainland, where warm and dry weather continues, elevating fire concerns.
