Funerals Patricia Green Wolcott, 56 Historian, genealogist helped many to trace family lines THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Patricia Green Wolcott, 56, of Owenton, was a genealogist who helped people from all over the world research their family lines. The former Edgewood resident, who was also a historian and well-known speaker, died Sunday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center of a disease of the immune system.

What began as a hobby for the 1950 graduate of Dixie Heights High School in Edgewood became nearly a full-time job for 35 years. "People wrote to her from all over the world," said a longtime friend, Barbara Wilson of Edgewood. "Patricia was interested in helping others trace their history. She made it a delight to research your Mrs. Wolcott had her own census records to help families decide what counties their family lines were from, Wilson said.

The genealogy research reflected a broader interest in the past. She would put on a program in which she dressed in gingham and high-top shoes. But she would point out that in the so-called good old days, women used scrub boards and cast-iron irons, and without electricity, they went to bed early and got up early, Wilson said. Mrs. Wolcott taught genealogy courses at Thomas More College, Kenton County Historical Society, and in Frankfort.

She moved to Owenton 11 years ago. She was the current president of Owen County Historical Society and former president of the Kentucky Historical Federation. She was an organizing member of the John Guill Chapter in Owenton of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, an organizing member of the Kenton County Historical Society and member of the Kentucky State Historical Society. She also was a member of the First Christian Church of Owenton. Her father was the late Joe Green, a writer at The Enquirer in the 1950s and '60s.

She leaves her husband, James W. Wolcott of Owenton; her son, James D. Wolcott of Huntsville, a daughter, Kit Stone of Lexington, and her mother, Catherine Green of Louisville. The service will be at 2 p.m. today at the First Christian Church of Owenton.

Burial will be in Owenton Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Owen County Historical Society or Owenton Rotary Club Student Fund. Neighbors raise a stink over dump BY FREDERICK BERMUDEZ The Cincinnati Enquirer Several Colerain Township residents told state officials Tuesday of the "unbearable" conditions caused by the nearby Rumpke Sanitary Landfill. "We are prisoners in our own home," Chloe Bernius told three Ohio Environmental Protection Agency officials during a public hearing at the University of Cincinnati.

"We don't open our windows. We don't entertain anymore it's unbearable." Bernius has been living on Hughes Road, across the street from the landfill, for 35 years. heard those promises before. Parents of drowning victim remain in jail BY BOB WESTON The Cincinnati Enquirer The parents of a 9-year-old drowning victim did not notify police that he was missing during a 35-hour absence, a prosecutor said in court Tuesday. Robert Laten, 30, and Parita Hines, 29, of the 500 block of Whiteman Street, West End, appeared Tuesday in Hamilton County Municipal Court on charges of child endangerment. The parents' bond was set at $5,000 apiece of pending preliminary hearings Aug. 10.

They were being held in the Hamilton County jail, where Laten was serving a 90-day sentence for driving without a license. Their son, Carlos Laten, drowned in a locked Cincinnati municipal pool at 233 W. McMicken Ave. He was able to enter the pool after a hole had been cut in a chain-link fence. His body was found about 1 a.m.

Sunday in the Hanna Pool that had closed at 8 p.m. Charles Dorfman, an assistant city prosecutor, told Judge Carol Mcllwain that the mother said she did not become concerned about her son's absence until 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Bruce Favret, a public defender representing Hines, said Hines did not notify police because she thought they would not begin searching for the boy until he had been missing at least 24 hours. Dorfman said the boy was last seen at home about 12:30 p.m.

Saturday. He said Laten searched for his son for an hour Saturday afternoon, then decided to wait for him to come home. "He didn't think it was necessary to contact police," the prosecutor said. Police officer Daniel Oliver, who investigated the case, said police always begin immediate searches for juveniles, even if they have histories of being runaways. Children 12 and under are listed as "critical missing" in police radio broadcasts, which gives such searches high priority.

Hospitals recruit volunteers to soothe, cuddle newborns BY TERRI BEATRICE The Cincinnati Enquirer After five years of volunteering at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Edgewood, 70-year-old Fern Schweer is using her grandmotherly skills in a special way. She holds babies. She and 16 other women provide human warmth to newborns awaiting adoption or in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Men are among volunteers on the waiting list for the fall session.

The nurses in St. Elizabeth's Family Birth Place are thankful for the "Loving Arms" program that began last month. "The problem that we have is because we're busy we don't always get a chance to do enough of this (hugging)," said Mary Garamy, head nurse of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and supervisor of Loving Arms. of information the more funeral director refer the individual death notice below.
