Director Lee Grant uses this suffering as the basis for Following Her Heart. premiering Monday, Nov. 28, on NBC.
Ann-Margret stars as. Ingalill Lundquist in this drama about a woman married, through an arrangement, to a man who has no love or respect for her. Her husband, Anders, loves his pet bird more than his wife, as is painfully obvious in the film by the amount of attention he gives it. It's hard to believe that a daughter is born out of this dysfunctional relationship. Without support and love from her husband, Ingalill turns to music and her dreams of performing at the Grand Ole Opry.
When her husband dies, she looks forward to living her life without anyone controlling her. Unfortunately, her husband has other plans. In his will, Anders leaves Ingalill's financial affairs in the hands of Kenny, their daughter's husband (who also happens to be just like Anders). It's this bit of cruelty that pushes Ingalill to join a tour group heading for Nashville. By the little amount of time spent on her marriage and life before, it is obvious that these must be simply a setup for the main story line of the movie.
In the tour group, she meets many interesting travelers who nickname her Lena because they cannot pronounce her real name. Through these people she opens up and discovers herself.
