Completing all eight main stories is only the beginning in Octopath Traveler 2. Each character has their own story — and their own final boss — that’ll take you across the two continents. After completing the main stories, you’ll also unlock special combined stories that delve deeper into the mysteries of the world. Once you’ve completed everything, a final storyline appears and dares you to complete it. The ‘Path to the Dawn‘ is the EX Story, and leads to the true ending. You’ll need a powerful party and plenty of preparation to take on the game’s final, final boss. Here’s how to begin the quest and how to complete the trickiest steps.

How To Begin ‘Path to the Dawn’ | EX Story Guide
The path to the true final boss is only available after completing everything else. Before you can begin the final story ‘Path to the Dawn‘ you’ll need to finish these prerequisites.
- Complete all 8 Main Stories.
- Complete all 4 Cross Stories.
Side Stories are NOT required. After beginning the true ending path — called EX Story — you’ll be locked out of Side Stories. You’ll be able to go back and complete any Side Stories after finishing the game. Before even attempting the final story quest, you’ll want to be prepared.
- All 8 party members need to be about Level 60-70~.
- All party members need to be equipped with the best possible gear you can find.
You’ll need all 8 characters prepared. All of them are required for the true final battle, and they’re needed for completing the last steps that lead to the final dungeon.
- How To Begin The EX Story: If you’ve fulfilled all the pre-requisites and you’re ready to take on the final challenge of the story, travel to the EX Chapter marker on your map.
- The marker will appear at Southern Cropdale Trail.
Approaching the location will bring up a massive warning message. You can choose to back out and prepare or continue.
How To Find The Four Blue Flames
Once you begin the EX Story, you’ll be tasked with finding and lighting four blue flames. The flames are hidden all over the world. Finding them all can take a very long time — but here’s where to find each one.
The Blue Flames can be encountered in any order. A boss is waiting at all four locations. You’ll need to bring specific characters in your party at each of the listed locations.
- Tomb of the Wardenbeasts: In the dungeon to the east of Beasting Village. Encounter the Grotesque Monster at the end of the dungeon and use the Shiny Mirror key item at the altar.
- Requires Ochette and Castii.
- Flamechurch – Cathedral: Travel to the Cathedral interior, north of Flamechurch village. Defeat Arcanette to gain access to the altar. Search the area to find a journal key item. Use the Shiny Mirror.
- Requires Temenos and Throne.
- Tranquil Grotto: A dungeon east of Ku. Like the other locations, use the Shiny Mirror key item at the altar.
- Requires Hikari and Agnea.
- Fellsun Ruins: From Crackridge, take the path east to the Fellsun Ruins dungeon. Search the dungeon to recover 17 journal entries. Use the Shiny Mirror at the end of the path.
- Requires Osvald and Partitio.
Once all the blue flames have been discovered, you’ll be able to enter the final dungeon. Check the map, and the dungeon will appear at the center of the Sundering Sea.
- How To Reach Vidania Castle: The final dungeon is located in the center of the Sundering Sea. After finding the four flames, the castle will rise up out of the rock formation in the center of the map. Take any boat to the castle to begin.
The castle leads to the true final boss. This is a difficult fight that requires you to split your party into two teams. You’ll need to build your team so they’re evenly matched and prepared to fight. Don’t put all your best party members in a single group. Once everyone is at least Level 60 or higher, you’ll be prepared to face the final boss and earn the true ending.
After defeating the boss, you’ll be able to swap characters freely and fully explore the world. Side Stories will become available again. Now you’ll want to prepare for the biggest challenge of the game — the optional super boss on ??? Island.
